iPod Obsessions: January 2011

Big month for older songs, for some reason. Perhaps because I played our wedding dance mix and heard a bunch of songs I hadn’t listened to in awhile.
  • “Burden of Tomorrow” and “King of Spain” by The Tallest Man on Earth – The first song is my #1 obsession lately.
  • “Bloodbuzz Ohio” by The National – The guy sings in my range!
  • “Rill Rill” by Sleigh Bells – I have no idea what they’re singing, but it sounds like they’ve having fun doing it.
  • “We All Lose One Another” and “I’ll Bring the Sun” by Jason Collett
  • “Things” by Frightened Rabbit
  • “The Mystery Zone” by Spoon
  • “Fixed” by Stars
  • “Now Winter Comes Slowly” by Sting – Not an enormous Sting fan, but his winter album is fantastic and this is the highlight.
From the vault:

  • “November in Ontario” by Skydiggers – Something about the weather made me remember this song, about a boating tragedy.
  • “Wondering Where the Lions Are” by Bruce Cockburn
  • “All for Swinging You Around” by New Pornographers
  • “Djobi Djoba” by Gypsy Kings – I remember moving to Montreal in 1988 and seeing Gypsy Kings at the top of the charts (above Michael Jackson, if I recall correctly).
  • “Let’s Dance” by David Bowie
  • “Yeah, Yeah, Yeah, Yeah, Yeah” by The Pogues – Gotta love the lyrics!
  • “Crane Wife 1 & 2,” “Crane Wife 3” and “Sons and Daughters” by The Decemberists - Their new album is coming out soon but I've lowered my expectations after hearing the first single, "Down by the Water," which sounds a little too much like "The One I Love" by REM.
