Saturday Beer Review: Harpoon Oak Aged Dunkel (100 Barrel Series)

I really like the Harpoon 100 Barrel Series. They’ve produced some interesting beers, often in lesser known styles. I also love dunkels (a German style I don’t see often in the U.S.), so was thrillled to see this beer on the shelf. Unfortunately, I found it a little disappointing. It’s good, but not great.

It starts well, with a great aroma, nice and malty, good dark rich coloring, and a nice head. It’s nice at the first sip, but then it totally fades on the palate without the lingering “chewiness” I would expect from a dunkel. I suspect they made the wrong choice in malts. I expect toasty but these are too weak. Still a decent beer: just a disappointment when I was expecting a good dunkel.
