Monday Musings: More Plastic Surgery for Men; Cairo Time; Insane F-35 Costs

More people who'll melt if they stand
too close to a flame...just what we need

More men are getting plastic surgery. Not sure what I feel about this. On one hand, there’s a small part of me that cracks a smile at men having to face what women have faced for decades. On the other hand (a much bigger hand in this case), the last thing we need is more plastic surgery, chemicals and attempts to turn back the clock on an inevitable process. When are we going to learn to age gracefully? So many did it for years without all this crap…

Along the same lines, sort of, I watched a lovely small film last night called Cairo Time. It stars Patricia Clarkson and Alexander Siddig. I was struck by the fact that they didn’t attempt to make Clarkson look younger. She looked very natural, very much her age – and quite beautiful. It was, it goes without saying, not a Hollywood production, but a Canadian-Irish-Egyptian co-production. Highly recommended.

I knew the F-35 was expensive, but I didn’t realize how expensive. With the purchase price and the maintenance, it’s expected to cost $1 trillion over just more than 20 years (see the GAO report). That is simply insane when we can’t even maintain roads and bridges adequately, let alone invest in the things we really need to do if we’re going to compete in the 21st century.
