iPod Obsessions: October 2011

  • “Out of Tune” and “It's Real” by Real Estate – I reviewed this album and the next in a short review, and it’s hard to imagine more different music!
  • “The Rapture (Fear Is a Mind Killa Mix)” and “Tiny Monsters” by Puscifer
  • “Raconte-moi une histoire” by M83 – Love this whole album but this track really grabs, in spite of its “preciousness.”
  • “The Prime Minister's Daughter” by Library Voices – Great indie Canadian band
  • “The Bad In Each Other” and “The Circle Married the Line” by Feist – Two tracks that are highlights on an outstanding album
  • “The Grey Ship” by EMA – An album that’s been growing on me
  • “My Mistakes” and “Roosevelt Island” by Eleanor Friedberger – This is one of my favorite albums of 2011
  • “Rifle Eyesight (Proper Name)” by Cymbals Eat Guitars – An epic song!
  • “Chicago,” “Talking At the Same Time,” “Bad As Me” and “Satisfied” by Tom Waits – From his new and awesome album; my favorites at the moment but who knows what I’ll like in a week!
  • “Viva la Vida” by Coldplay – I never bought this album when it came out but decided to listen to it before listening to their new album (I was thinking of reviewing it and then thought “What the hell is the point? Every blog, magazine, and newspaper out there will review it.”) and this song just really grabbed me.
  • “Bleed a Little While Tonight,” “Subversives” and “Rosy And Grey” by The Lowest Of The Low – This is probably the best Canadian indie album of all time but I lost my CD and can’t find it down here. I found these few tunes online and have been playing them obsessively.
  • “The Body Of An American,” “A Pair of Brown Eyes” and “The Sickbed of Cuchulainn” by The Pogues – From Rum, Sodomy and the Lash – The power of this band when Shane MacGowan was not yet debauched enough to be totally useless.
  • “Boy In the Bubble” and “Cowgirl in the Sand” by Barnstar! – This is my downstairs neighbor Zack’s bluegrass band, their first album, and I love it! Some covers and some originals, all lovingly executed. Check out the full album here.
  • “Funny Word,” “Miss K.” and “The Bump” by Deer Tick – The liner notes suggest playing this f***er loud. I agree!
  • “Best Of Both Worlds,” “Redneck Wonderland,” “Dream World,” “Sometimes” and “Short Memory” – Whenever I’m pissed off at the political situation, I find myself listening to the Oils.
